  • 2002 Heinz R. Pagels Human Rights Awards

    Among the winners of this year's awards is Martha Beatriz Roque Cabello, an economist and one of the founders of Internal Dissidents Working Group for Analysis of the Cuban Socio-Economic Situation.

    The Pagels Award is presented in recognition of the honoree's contributions to human rights and has been given in the past to such luminaries as Chinese physicist Fang Li-Zhi, American journalist A.M. Rosenthal, Canadian mathematician Israel Halperin, and Russian physicist Andrei Sakharov. This year's recipients are:

    Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello

    Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello is an economist and one of Cuba's most prominent civil rights activists. She is the director of the Cuban Institute of Independent Economists and operates a Web site, The Web site is the primary source of non-governmental information about the economic and political situation in Cuba. Dr. Roque Cabello was dismissed from the University of Havana for anti-government activities and imprisoned for more than two years, but continues her visible activities in support of human rights.

    A second Pagels Award is also being awarded this year. However, because of concern for the safety and well being of this scientist, the honoree's name cannot be revealed at this time.
