Monica Kurpiewski

Director, Business Development 

Monica Kurpiewski joined the New York Academy of Sciences in October 2008 as the Director of Business Development.  In this role, she is responsible for the Academy's business development and corporate partnership activities.

Prior to the Academy, she was with UK Trade and Investment, an arm of the British Foreign Office, as the Vice Consul of Research and Development.  In this role, she was responsible for the origination of R&D investment by U.S. companies into the UK in the East Coast market.

Ms. Kurpiewski started her career as a research associate and consultant for RIT Research Corporation, a for profit subsidiary of RIT.  She specialized in human adult psychophysical responses to color in print and display as well as using Taguchi experimentation methods to optimize imaging systems including copiers, scanners and printers.

Ms. Kurpiewski decided to leave the research lab and go to industry.  She went to work for IBM in the Printing Systems Division as a color development engineer with the InfoPrint printer program.  She moved from engineering to marketing, where she was the product manager for the InfoColor 70 printer product line which was a $180 million dollar program.  In addition, she was also responsible for developing new global market opportunities for the InfoColor 70, specifically in pharmaceutical manufacturing applications.  She was then asked to join the division strategy team as the World Wide Marketing Strategist for color on-demand enterprise printers. 

Ms. Kurpiewski has a diverse educational background which led to her experience across many scientific disciplines.  She received her BS in Photographic and Imaging Science from RIT focusing in optics, lasers and physics.  After six years in industry, she continued her studies at Hunter College in the life sciences, concentrating in organic chemistry and biochemistry.  She completed her academic career at Columbia University with an MPA in Environmental Science and Policy concentrating in alternative energy, oil policy and economics.
