    Vice President and Scientific Director

Stacie Grossman Bloom joined The New York Academy of Sciences in November 2005 as Director of Life Sciences, responsible for developing scientific content for Academy programs, and generating strategic alliances with outside organizations, foundations, and individuals. In 2008 she was promoted to Vice-President and Scientific Director, where she has made key contributions to new initiatives in Translational Medicine, Nutrition, and more. In her role, Bloom currently oversees a team of PhD scientists to develop the Academy's overall interdisciplinary scientific portfolio and events around the globe.

Bloom conducted her thesis work in cell and molecular biology at Georgetown University and earned her PhD in 2000. She continued her studies as a post-doctoral fellow at the Rockefeller University in the neurobiology laboratory of Nobel laureate Paul Greengard. In Greengard's lab, Bloom's highly productive research revealed novel information about neuronal synaptic activity and resulted in publications in peer-reviewed journals.

As a scientist, Bloom held fellowships from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Alliance for Schizophrenia and Depression (NARSAD), the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH), and the Rockefeller University Women in Science program.

Bloom left the bench to become an editor at Nature Medicine, where she obtained a broad-based understanding of human health and disease. She was then the News and Reviews editor at the Journal of Clinical Investigation. She is the lead author of 43 primary scientific papers, news features, and editorials.
