  • Parent Theory: Research and Evidence-Based Practice

    Monday, December 7, 2009 | 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
The New York Academy of Sciences

    Presented by the Psychology Section

Parenting research enjoys a rich history in psychology. Much of the psychological study has focused on disciplinary or socialization styles as well as a continuum from supportive to harsh parenting practices. To be sure, regardless of specific dimension emphasized, parenting is related to multiple, potential child developmental outcomes including, for instance, academic achievement, attachment, emotion regulation, and social skills. Although research covers decades of study, there are few theoretical frameworks specific to parents and the important parenting activities they perform. This presentation addresses parent theory and also considers some of the evidence-based psychological practice issues in terms of assessment, consultation, and intervention.
