  • Innovation & Economic Development

  • Innovation drives economic development, and science and technology are at its core. The New York Academy of Sciences possesses essential strengths in all of these areas, and is a uniquely neutral nexus between the academic, industry, government, and NGO communities in the United States and internationally. Such strengths have attracted partners around the globe who are eager to become more competitive on the world stage.

The Academy’s Innovation & Economic Development programs involve four key activities:

    Regional Economic Development

In response to growing demand from state and municipal governments for guidance in their policies and investments, the Academy has developed a science and technology innovation advisory program. The program is designed to assist urban areas around the world in developing science- and technology-based initiatives that leverage local resources to meet regional needs.

    Science Meets Business

The Academy is forging closer ties among the scientific, entrepreneurial, and business communities in New York to help the city and state become more efficient in promoting entrepreneurs, new ventures, and innovation. We are creating a forum for participants to learn about early-stage technology, exchange valuable information and insights, generate dealflow, and network within the community of scientists and other professionals in emerging technologies.

    Convening & Publishing

The New York Academy of Sciences is one of the world’s foremost organizers of scientific conferences. Scientific and governmental organizations in London, China, and New York have turned to the Academy to develop events focusing on the frontiers of research fields of intense local interest. Conference highlights can be disseminated widely in a number of live and archived publishing and communications formats.

    Science Alliance

The Science Alliance provides career and professional development mentoring for students and postdocs in the sciences and engineering, both through live events and an online portal. The program offers opportunities to network and holds an annual 13-week course called Idea to IPO. Designed for early-career investigators, the course provides practical information about how to translate scientific research into viable commercial ventures.
