About

Who We Are

Evelyn Strauss, Ph.D.

Executive Director, Scientists Without BordersSM

Evelyn Strauss, Ph.D., is the Executive Director of Scientists Without BordersSM, the new NYAS initiative that aims to improve quality of life in the developing world by mobilizing and coordinating science-based activities.

Dr. Strauss earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry at the University of California, San Francisco. She then moved to Stanford as a postdoc to study bacterial pathogenesis. Realizing that she preferred telling the stories of science to generating them herself, she moved from the bench top to the laptop. In 1997, she interned at Science News; since then, she has written for a variety of publications and organizations, including Scientific American, Health, WebMD, HHMI Bulletin, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the American Academy of Microbiology. She is a contributing correspondent for Science and the official citation writer for the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation. She co-created Science's Web site on aging (Science of Aging Knowledge Environment, SAGE KE), ran its news operation from 2000 to 2006, and oversaw the entire site from 2004-2006.

In addition to directing Scientists Without BordersSM and writing, Dr. Strauss teaches science journalism and grant writing at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
