Each year, the New York Academy of Sciences honors distinguished individuals through its Fellowship and Honorary Life Member awards. These awards are highly regarded in the international science community and reflect the Academy's continuing commitment to excellence, its heritage, and serving its worldwide membership.
The awardees constitute a select and prestigious community of scientists, engineers, research physicians, and others deeply concerned about science and technology. Awardees are recognized for extraordinary scientific accomplishments and service to the science community and the public. They represent all sectors served by the Academy: biomedical sciences, physical sciences, mathematics, engineering and technology, social sciences, science and technology policy, and science education.
Academy peers initiate the nomination process. The Board of Governors' Committee on Fellows and Honorary Life Members reviews all nominees and makes its selection on the basis of the quality and extent of accomplishment and service.
A candidate for Fellowship must have attained recognition for significant professional achievement in research, or for advancement and leadership in science, medicine, or engineering. All candidates must have been Academy members for at least one year by the application deadline.
A candidate for Honorary Life Membership must have attained great distinction in science and need not be an Academy member; only two are selected each year.
Nominations must include letters of support from three leading scientists in the nominee's field, one of which should be the letter of nomination. The nomination should include the candidate's curriculum vitae and a list of publications. Only one of the letters can be from a person employed at the same institution as the candidate or closely associated with the candidate's research. Self-nominations are not permitted.
The New York Academy of Sciences is an independent, not-for-profit organization that has been committed to advancing science, technology, and society worldwide since 1817.
