Academy Profile

Vision

Creating a global community of science for the benefit of humanity.

Mission

To advance scientific knowledge, positively impact the major global challenges of society with solutions that are science-based, and increase the number of scientifically informed individuals in society at large.

Programs and Initiatives

Founded in 1817, the New York Academy of Sciences is an independent, nonprofit organization with more than 25,000 members in 140 countries. The Academy fulfills its mission through the following efforts:

The Conferences Program sponsors 8-12 major events annually, bringing together international groups of speakers to exchange information on basic or applied frontier research fields and on the broader societal roles of science and technology.

The Frontiers of Science Program convenes senior investigators and young scientists regularly in multi-speaker, interdisciplinary discussion groups to explore ideas and exchange information in the biological, chemical, and computational sciences.

The Physical Sciences & Engineering Program provides a forum for the exchange of new ideas and data in interdisciplinary areas such as machine learning, green science and sustainability, quantitative finance, string theory, and astrophysics and cosmology.

The Science Alliance for Graduate Students and Postdocs is a collaboration among 30 universities and other scientific institutions in the United States and around the world that provides guidance on careers, networking, and mentoring for 5000 young investigators.

Scientists Without BordersSM mobilizes and coordinates science-based efforts in the developing world to improve health care, foster agricultural progress, promote environmental well-being, and devise energy solutions.

The Committee on the Human Rights of Scientists fights on behalf of scientists, health professionals, engineers, and educators who have been detained, imprisoned, exiled, or deprived of the right to pursue science.

The Academy's International Programs include partnerships with the major universities in the United Kingdom and the Chinese Ministry of Health, and programs in the United Arab Emirates and Mexico City.

Publishing and Dissemination

The Academy has a long history of disseminating scientific information through print publications and, in recent years, has become a leader in developing online venues for sharing its scientific programming with members and other interested audiences worldwide.

The Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, continually published since 1823, provides multidisciplinary perspectives on research of current interest to scientists with far-reaching implications for the wider scientific community, and society at large.

NYAS eBriefings provide in-depth online reports on meetings hosted by Academy and its partners, including multimedia features such as slides, audio, and selected video; open questions on future research areas; and extensive resource links.

Science & the City is a unique Web resource that itemizes, on a daily basis, the vast array of scientific and science-related cultural events taking place in the NYC area. Podcasts with scientists and authors, lecture series, and e-mail newsletters are other S&C offerings.

These initiatives and others enable the Academy to advance the impact of science on multiple fronts and build on the distinguished legacy of its membership. Since its early days, the Academy has attracted prominent members, including U.S. Presidents Jefferson and Monroe, Charles Darwin and John James Audubon, and Albert Einstein, among many others. Its current President's Council includes some two dozen Nobel Prize winners.

The Academy is located at 7 World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan, just blocks from where it was founded nearly two centuries ago.
