Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Academy's new policy regarding its meetings?

As of September 1, 2003 the local meetings of the New York Academy of Sciences will be open without charge only to Academy Members.
  • Members may attend all meetings.
  • The entry fee for nonmembers is $20.
  • Students and postdocs who are not members of the Academy pay $10 entry fee.
  • Because space is limited, electronic RSVPs are required to attend a local meeting. To make a reservation, click RSVP from any event listing or event detail page.

Why is the Academy adopting these new policies?

The Academy is embarked on a major rejuvenation of its membership by developing entirely new and highly innovative member services designed to reengage working scientists and, especially, young researchers. In an era when fewer and fewer citizens believe in membership for its own sake, the Academy still enjoys a large, multidisciplinary, global constituency graced by many of the world's most distinguished scientists. We have been working with active scientists to create novel programs for members only and a fee structure that is affordable and yet will enable the Academy to maintain these programs. The initiatives include the Science Alliance for Graduate Students and Postdocs, Frontiers of Science, Physical Sciences and Engineering, and eBriefings. You can learn more about these by visiting New Initiatives.

If I am an Individual Member, can I attend any local Academy meetings?

Yes,members can attend any local Academy meetings. See Membership Information for description of the benefits associated with various categories of membership.

I am not a member of the Academy but want to attend a meeting. What should I do?

Nonmembers interested in our programs are invited to join the Academy (US Individual Member — $105 or $115 (International). Otherwise, you may pay an admission fee of $20 for the meeting. This admission fee may not be applied to membership dues. To join the Academy, visit the online application form.

Do I have to make a reservation for an Academy meeting?

Space is limited for local Academy events, so we ask that you RSVP. To make a reservation, you can register online. If an event fills up, people without reservations will be placed on standby until space becomes available.

Why is the Academy adopting a new reservation system?

We are adopting a new online RSVP system to better inform our members of upcoming events of specific interest and to make membership confirmation easier on the day of the event.

How can I learn about upcoming meetings?

Please consult the online Calendar as well as the current issue of Update magazine to see the full listing of meetings. In addition, e-mail announcements are sent to Members and Affiliates of individual sections and discussion groups about meetings they are sponsoring.

I am a member of the Academy; why am I not getting e-mails from my section?

Please make sure your membership and contact information are current and that your sections of interest are on record. Write to us at membership@nyas.org with questions and updates. Or you may review and update your own record, including up to three section selections.

What if I am a student or postdoc?

Student and Postdoc Members may attend all local Academy meetings. In addition, they may participate in the programs of the New York Science Alliance of Graduate Students and Postdocs. For more information on the Science Alliance, visit http://www.nyas.org/sciencealliance.

Students and postdocs who are not members will be admitted with an admission fee of $10 per meeting. Students are encouraged to ask their department director about having their school join the Science Alliance, which includes Academy membership for the graduate students and postdocs of participating institutions.

How can I make dinner reservations?
