Planned Giving
1817 Legacy Society
By making a planned gift to the Academy you help ensure that the Academy continues to support the science of tomorrow and future generations of scientists. By thoughtfully remembering the Academy, you can leave the legacy you wish for science. In recognition of you support, we would like to honor you as a member of our 1817 Legacy Society. This is our way of thanking you for your leadership.

Bequests
The charitable bequest is a simple yet effective way of providing for the New York Academy of Sciences without giving up the asset until death. It is written into your Last Will and Testament. Bequests to the New York Academy of Sciences are deductible from your gross estate and can therefore offer estate tax savings. There is no limit on the amount you can leave to the Academy or to other charitable organizations through your will. When drafting a will, there are various types of bequests for different needs:
  • Specific Bequests: You can name the New York Academy of Sciences the direct beneficiary of a stated amount of money, a particular piece of property, or a stated percentage of your estate.
  • Residuary Bequests: You can designate the New York Academy of Sciences to receive all or a portion of the remainder of your estate once all specific bequests (to family and friends) have been satisfied.
  • Contingent Bequests Often, individuals provide that assets should go to family members or friends. However, it is important to provide for a contingent beneficiary to receive assets in case your named individual beneficiaries do not survive you. The Will should identify the New York Academy of Sciences by its legal designation, which is as follows: The New York Academy of Sciences, a nonprofit organization, with principal offices currently located at 7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich St., 40th Fl., New York, NY 10007-2157.
Use of Gifts
There are several ways to ensure the future of the New York Academy of Sciences. Some of the most popular methods are Bequests (including the New York Academy of Sciences in your Will) and Gifts of Stock.
  • You may either restrict your bequest or leave it unrestricted. Unrestricted gifts offer the advantage of permitting the New York Academy of Sciences to allocate resources in a manner consistent with changing priorities and strategies over time.
  • It is important to notify the Academy when you have completed your request to your broker.
  • If you complete your will and include the New York Academy of Sciences, we hope you will share this information with us.
