  • Emerging Infectious Diseases & Microbiology

The Emerging Infectious Diseases & Microbiology Discussion Group holds periodic meetings focusing on the biology and management of pressing health threats. Past events have focused on the latest information relating to diseases including malaria, tuberculosis, aspergillosis, influenza, and SARS.

Topics of interest to the group include mechanisms of pathogenesis; animal and in vitro models of infection; diagnostic opportunities and reagents; action of toxins; host-pathogen interactions; immunological response and immune evasion; mechanisms of transmission; case studies and epidemiology of infectious diseases; therapeutic agents and other approaches to control of infection; and genomic, proteomic, and structural biological approaches to understanding infectious agents.

The discussion group brings together scientists conducting basic research, industry representatives working on drug and vaccine development, and local and national public health officials to exchange information and new ideas, and helps to develop and strengthen cooperation within the community.
