Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences editorial staff
Published: July 2016
Published since 1824, Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences is the Academy’s premier scientific publication.
This issue presents a meeting report stemming from the conference “Mobile Health: The Power of Wearables, Sensors, and Apps to Transform Clinical Trials,” sponsored by the New York Academy of Sciences and Medidata Solutions on September 30 and October 1, 2015 in New York City. In addition, five original research articles in this issue discuss (1) cognitive functions in adults with β-thalassemia major: before and after blood transfusion and comparison with healthy controls; (2) musical cognition in Alzheimer’s disease: application of the Montreal Battery of Evaluation of Amusia; (3) thrombopoietin-induced hematopoiesis from mouse embryonic stem cells via hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α)–dependent activation of a bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) autoregulatory loop; (4) mechanisms through which deferoxamine ameliorates hepatosteatosis in ob/ob mice; and (5) evidence from an observational study showing that resting in darkness improves downbeat nystagmus.
