Classical steroidogenic tissues (e.g., gonads and adrenal gland) synthesize steroid hormones (i.e., sex steroid hormones and corticosteroids), which after their release into the blood may reach the nervous system and exert a variety of effects on the neuronal and glial compartment. This classical endocrine mechanism has been recently amplified by the concept that some steroids (the so-called neurosteroids or neuroactive steroids) may be also synthesized in the nervous system and consequently exert local effects on their nervous targets through paracrine and/or autocrine mechanisms. This volume covers many intriguing topics related to this field of research, focusing largely on glucocorticoids, non-classical mechanisms of action, regulation of reproduction, steroids and glial cells, behavioral effects, and pathological correlations.
