Recent advances in computer technology have provided the tools and the environment to study, analyze, and better understand complex systems. This technological development has enabled researchers to collect and analyze massive amounts of data to a scale previously not possible. The impact of this technology is now being felt in the medical field and in the biological sciences. This volume gives an overview of current work in such areas as soft computing in medicine and biological sciences; algorithms in proteomics and structural genomics; clinical procedures and hospital information systems and analysis; image processing in medicine; and knowledge discovery and data mining.
