The parahippocampal region plays a critical role, with other nearby structures, in temporal lobe functions such as learning, memory, emotions, and complex behavioral processes. Research over the last decade suggests that damage to this area contributes directly to degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. These papers and posters integrate recent knowledge of the structure and function of the region with new insights from clinical studies. These studies provide an important survey of new research on parahippocampal anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology, and its interactions with other structures, including the amygdala and the hippocampus.
