Mehmood Khan, MD, is Executive Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer of PepsiCo. In its global food and beverage portfolio PepsiCo has 22 brands that generate more than $1 billion in annual retail sales, and a total $66 billion in annual sales.
Dr. Khan is at the forefront of the Company's ongoing programs to transform, grow, and continually improve its global portfolio. He was appointed Chief Scientific Officer in 2008, and has led all aspects of PepsiCo's expanded investment in research and development; recruited highly regarded scientists and medical experts; launched research projects with leading universities worldwide; and opened new global R&D centers. Dr. Khan was appointed Executive Vice President in 2012, and directs PepsiCo's enterprise research planning and new business development supported by global R&D.
From 2010 to 2012 Dr. Khan was Chief Executive Officer, Global Nutrition Group. Under his leadership, PepsiCo's global portfolio of nourishing products increased from $10 billion to $14 billion in annual sales and led the creation of the Muller Quaker Dairy, the Company's joint venture with Muller Group to enter the US value-added dairy market.
Before joining PepsiCo in 2007, Dr. Khan was President, Takeda Global Research & Development, overseeing Takeda Pharmaceuticals Company's worldwide drug development efforts with sales of over $10 billion worldwide. Prior to joining Takeda, Dr. Khan was a consultant endocrinologist and faculty member at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, serving also as the Director of the Diabetes, Endocrine and Nutritional Trials Unit. Prior to the Mayo Clinic, he spent nine years leading programs in diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, and nutrition at the University of MN. He has served as faculty both in the department of Food Sciences, College of Agriculture and the Medical School at the University of MN. He currently serves on a number of national and international committees including as a member of the Board of Governors at the New York Academy of Sciences.
