Defying and Justifying
Monday, May 4, 2009
Presented By
The lecture explores how activists and attorneys, in Ian Hacking's terms, "make up persons," by simultaneously using the identity concepts of class, gender, race, and sexual orientation. The event considered is a 2001 execution in Oklahoma, as parties involved competitively formed and deployed these and other concepts to make a person suitable for the state to kill or let live in contrast to their use of the same concepts to make the "victim" worthy of the "justice" the legal system aims to deliver.
The Academy's Anthropology Section is the crossroads for four-field anthropology in the greater New York area. The Section has a long history of sponsoring events and publications that have become landmarks in the discipline. All the subfields of anthropology are represented in the Section's program: social/cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and anthropological linguistics. The program combines talks about broad disciplinary and public concerns with state-of-the-art presentations in specialized areas of research.
