Powerful Teaching Statements for STEM Educators: An Interactive Workshop for Scientists and Teachers
Saturday, November 9, 2013
The New York Academy of Sciences
Are you interested in:
- Effectively summarizing your STEM teaching experiences and philosophy into a powerful document that can be used by employers and colleagues to understand your teaching style?
- Learning about effective STEM teaching strategies and how you can relate and incorporate these strategies into your own philosophy?
- Learning about the future directions of STEM education in the United States and how these changes will alter the expectations on science teachers?
Then please join us for the interactive workshop, Powerful Teaching Statements for STEM Educators. Whether you intend to or currently teach science to K-12, undergraduate or graduate students, it is vital to outline your teaching philosophy and strategies in a well designed teaching statement. Moreover, if you intend to enter the job market for college teaching or K-12 positions, a strong teaching statement will be essential for a competitive application.
This interactive full- day workshop will focus on the components of the teaching philosophy statement and effective learning strategies that should be incorporated into your statement. Each session of the workshop will be structured around a short hands-on activity conducted in small groups. As a participant you will take notes on the different components of a teaching statement during each session, and the workshop will culminate by combining your notes into a teaching statement draft, which will then be reviewed by your peers.

Martha Cyr, PhD
WPI's STEM Education Center
Dr. Martha Cyr is currently the Executive Director of the newly founded STEM Education Center and a faculty member of the Mechanical Engineering department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI.) Prior to that she was the Director of K-12 Outreach at WPI (2003-2011.) She received her BS in Mechanical Engineering ('82) from the University of New Hampshire. Her advanced degrees, M.S. ('87) and PhD ('97) are both in Mechanical Engineering from WPI. In addition to her academic work, she worked as a Thermal Engineer for Data General for three years ('88-'91.)
Dr. Cyr has been leading innovation in the integration of engineering in K-12 classrooms since 1995 when she was a member of the Tufts University Mechanical Engineering department. She was the founding director of the Center for Engineering Educational Outreach at Tufts and served in that role for six years. While in that position, she played an active part in the state's revision of their K-12 curriculum frameworks – resulting in a learning strand called Technology/Engineering. In 2002 she was an active part of the team that created the ASEE K-12 division. Dr. Cyr moved to WPI in 2003 where she is the first person to hold the position of Director of K-12 Outreach for the Institution.
Dr. Cyr's work in K-12 outreach and undergraduate teaching has produced six journal publications, eleven proceeding papers, and over 30 presentations. She has headed up the creation of three educational resources: The Prentice Hall Science Explorer middle school science series of texts, the Making the Connection series of resources for introducing engineering, and the LEGO Mindstorms for SchoolsUsing ROBOLAB series of texts.
Mia Dubosarsky, PhD
WPI's STEM Education Center
Dr. Mia Dubosarsky is the Director of Professional Development at WPI's STEM Education Center. In her role she develops and conducts STEM themed professional development programs for a variety of audiences: from preschool teachers learning how to integrate engineering practices with literacy, to school district principals and superintendents working to develop a strategic plan for integrating STEM into their districts. Mia also serves as an adjunct faculty at Lesley University's Science in Education program, teaching a course titled Assessment for Learning in the Science Classroom.
Prior to her work at the WPI and Lesley, Dr. Dubosarsky was part of a team who worked to support teachers from a Native American Reservation in developing culturally based science and math activities.
In her earlier years as a science educator, Dr. Dubosarsky founded and managed a science enrichment enterprise for seven years to which she developed a two-year program comprised of science stories, games and experiments. She was appointed by the Israeli Ministry of Education to design the science program for an Art & Science center for elementary school children.
Dr. Dubosarsky received a BA in Biology from Israel's Institute of Technology (Technion) and a PhD doctorate in Curriculum & Instruction (science education) from the University of Minnesota.
