Success at work, both in and outside of academia, requires us to collaborate well with other people. Conflict is inevitable and we are routinely called upon to resolve difficult conversations. Due to the nature of their work, academic researchers often have highly developed intellectual and analytical capabilities while struggling with communication and conflict resolution skills in the lab.
In this weekend workshop you will learn critical skills and tools to cultivate more fulfilling and productive working relationships. Through exercises and role plays using your own examples, you will get a chance to practice these skills and receive direct feedback from the facilitators and fellow participants. You will learn how to transform difficult conversations into productive ones and practice effective strategies for resolving conflict.
The acquired skills will set you up for greater success and more fulfillment in your current lab work. And for those planning to transition into non-academic careers it will provide you with critical skills to thrive in the for-profit world.
In order to participate in this workshop, there is mandatory pre-work which should take no longer than 30 minutes. We will send this assignment after you register for the event.
Jane Bliss Birk
Jane Bliss Birk is an executive coach, facilitator and consultant with more than 18 years of experience in training, development, communications and coaching in the corporate world.
A few examples of Jane’s corporate and organizational engagements through her private practice include: training and coaching leaders at JPMorgan Chase, PwC, Google and entrepreneurial firms on executive presence and presentation skills; developing career satisfaction and relationship skills programs for the NYU Medical School; consulting a boutique media/communications firm on revamping its internal training program; and career development program for PhD-level scientist members of the NY Academy of Sciences.
Before working independently through her private practice, Jane held a management role at Google’s New York office, where she created an in-house coaching program to foster a mentoring culture within Google’s sales leadership team and regularly coached the leaders in private sessions. For multiple teams at Google, she facilitated MBTI-based personality assessments and coached leaders on their teams’ profiles to increase self-awareness, improve communication and minimize conflict.
She is a speaker and trainer on communication and leadership topics for example at the NY Academy of Sciences or “What can you be with a PhD” and facilitates and coaches MBAs at Columbia Business School.
Jane holds a B.B.A. in Marketing and is a CTI- and ICF-certified coach. She is a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® Certified Practitioner. She is continually engaging in ongoing professional training, currently a facilitator candidate for Brené Brown’s “The Daring Way,” to help private clients and executives to live braver lives through practicing vulnerability. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and four-year old son and loves practicing yoga and singing jazz standards in New York’s West Village.
Matthias Birk is a leadership consultant and executive coach. He worked as a consultant in McKinsey’s Mindsets & Capabilities Practice, advising clients on leadership development, change and talent management. He teaches at Columbia Business School, and is a guest lecturer at The Wharton School, and the School of Public Policy at CEU Budapest and facilitates leadership development programs for corporations and NGOs in the US, Europe, South America and Asia and has coached over a hundred executives individually.
Matthias received his PhD from the Humboldt University of Berlin, was a visiting scholar at Columbia Business School, studied Organizational Psychology at the RWTH Aachen and UC Berkeley and is a CTI- and ICF- certified coach.
He published in major academic and business journals such as the Sloan Management Review, wrote a Columbia Business School Teaching case and has held invited talks at various international conferences. He lives with his family in Brooklyn.
