If you're thinking of alternative careers and have an interest in business and aptitude for solving problems, management consulting may be a career path for you. McKinsey & Company, the top global management consulting firm, will lead this session and discuss what it means to be a consultant, address making the transition from academic research or medicine, and provide real-world examples of the type of business problems that they are hired to solve. Attendees will learn problem solving strategies and interview preparation tips, as well as have an opportunity to participate in a mock consulting engagement.
The aim of this workshop is twofold; firstly to show the wider Academy community of graduate students, post-docs and medical students about how they can apply their skills to solving problems beyond the pure sciences or medicine, and secondly to demystify an exciting career option outside academia.
*Reception to follow.

This meeting is free for all members of the Academy, but you must register in advance and complete the accompanying survey in order to attend.
McKinsey & Company
McKinsey & Company is a management consulting firm that helps leading companies and institutions make distinctive, lasting, and substantial improvements in their performance. Approximately 9,000 consultants with diverse backgrounds work in more than 100 offices in over 60 countries. McKinsey advises organizations worldwide on issues of strategy, organization, operations, and technology.
McKinsey was one of the first consulting firms to recognize the potential contributions of those without traditional business training, and to actively recruit candidates with advanced professional degrees (APDs). Today, more than half of our consultants have a doctorate (PhD), law (JD, LLB), medical (MD), or non-business master's degree.
Our strong commitment to training and support will help you confidently transition to the business world. There's absolutely nothing about "business" that you can't learn or that we haven't helped thousands of advanced professionals master before. In fact, after a short time, our colleagues and clients are not able to tell the difference between the business knowledge held by MBAs and those with other advanced professional degrees, and clients value the diversity of our teams' backgrounds.
McKinsey seeks individuals with outstanding records of academic and managerial or professional achievement, exceptional analytical and quantitative problem solving skills, and an ability to work effectively with people at all levels in an organization, to influence and motivate others, to communicate complex ideas effectively, and to work collaboratively in a team environment.
