Presented By

The New York Academy of Sciences is proud to offer our first-ever Mid-Winter Break Science Camp from February 21-24, 2017. Over the course of four days, students in 5th-8th grades will work alongside scientists from some of New York City’s leading institutions in a range of hands-on activities to expand their skills in multiple STEM areas.

Activities include:

  • Learning the coding language Scratch to program their own video games to mimic their physical movements
  • Solve engineering challenges by working with a team to build a marshmallow tower
  • Conducting scientific experiments on ice at the nearby Rink at Brookfield Place
  • And more!

Over the course of this four-day Science Camp, students will gain:

  • Leadership skills through STEM design challenges
  • Communication techniques that allow them to share science concepts with their peers
  • Scientific collaboration and engineering skills

Session Descriptions

Introduction to Scratch: Students will learn how to connect simple sensors to a laptops to manipulate video games that react to their movement and instructions.

Leadership and Teamwork: Students will learn the skills sets for leadership and how to be a good leader in the STEM world, with exposure to real world examples of teenagers who are STEM leaders. Students will practice their skills through a variety of hands-on challenges.

Field Trips: Students will visit nearby institutions to test what they have learned. For example, students will go ice-skating to see how sensors react differently on ice.
