The New York Academy of Sciences is proud to offer our first-ever Mid-Winter Break Science Camp from February 21-24, 2017. Over the course of four days, students in 5th-8th grades will work alongside scientists from some of New York City’s leading institutions in a range of hands-on activities to expand their skills in multiple STEM areas.
Activities include:
- Learning the coding language Scratch to program their own video games to mimic their physical movements
- Solve engineering challenges by working with a team to build a marshmallow tower
- Conducting scientific experiments on ice at the nearby Rink at Brookfield Place
- And more!
Over the course of this four-day Science Camp, students will gain:
- Leadership skills through STEM design challenges
- Communication techniques that allow them to share science concepts with their peers
- Scientific collaboration and engineering skills
- Teamwork and problem-solving experience
Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the program.

What are the dates and times of the program?
This camp will take place during NYC's DOE Mid-Winter Recess which is from February 21–24, 2016. The times are from 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Who is eligible for this camp?
Students in grades 5th–8th.
How much does the program cost?
The program costs $650 (early registration, before 12/19/16, $550). Lunch is included in the program cost.
How do I apply for the program?
Parents and/or guardians may register the student for the cohort. Upon confirmation of payment, the parent and/or guardian will receive an email from the Academy with next steps. In order to participate in the program, the parent and/or guardian must submit a signed permission slip permitting the student to attend the program. How many students will participate?
We expect to enroll 150 students in this cohort.
When will I be notified about my registration?
Within a week of registration, you will receive an email with additional logistical information.
When is the deadline for registration?
Registered students will be accepted until capacity is reached.
Is there a dress code?
No, although students should aim to wear clothes that permit easy movement for activities.

Session Descriptions
Introduction to Scratch: Students will learn how to connect simple sensors to a laptops to manipulate video games that react to their movement and instructions.
Leadership and Teamwork: Students will learn the skills sets for leadership and how to be a good leader in the STEM world, with exposure to real world examples of teenagers who are STEM leaders. Students will practice their skills through a variety of hands-on challenges.
Field Trips: Students will visit nearby institutions to test what they have learned. For example, students will go ice-skating to see how sensors react differently on ice.
