Hearing loss affects an estimated 36 million American adults. Current treatments include hearing aids and cochlear implants. These devices provide substantial benefits for many patients, but also have significant shortcomings and new options are needed. Most cases of acquired hearing loss are due to degeneration and subsequent loss of cochlear hair cells. Regenerative therapies therefore hold potential to provide significant benefits. More research is necessary, however, as the molecular signaling that initiates regenerative proliferation is not well understood.

This symposium will bring together experts of the auditory system and hair cell regeneration to give an overview of the recent advancements in the field, identify knowledge gaps, and outline future directions towards a cure for age-related hearing loss.
