The New York Academy of Sciences

Join the Science Alliance at the New York Academy of Sciences as we celebrate stories of scientists who have redefined their PhD experience, crafting a vision for their professional mission. Each of these one-on-one talks, which will take place throughout the year, will be moderated by Alejandro de la Puente, Associate Director of the Science Alliance.

Our first featured guest is Sabin Dhakal, PhD, a native of Nepal and a researcher in breast cancer biology at Harvard University.

Our conversation will take you through Sabin's journey to the U.S. to pursue his career interests, to his activities as a researcher in breast cancer biology, to his passion to expand his horizons into entrepreneurship. Sabin will share how he was guided by his passion to change the world around him, spurring him to apply science and innovation to a variety of fields such as scientific ventures, science diplomacy and policy and global health honing his leadership skills as he went. The passion steered him to lead several on- and off-campus initiatives. One of many highlights of these initiatives involve leading the efforts to design and initiate an introductory course in Science and Technology Policy and working with the university administration to design the certificate program in Science Policy. This effort was perceived enthusiastically by the graduate school community both within and outside the university and has been pivotal in guiding graduate students who want to explore science policy as a career. His story will inspire you to rethink your own PhD experience, question the existing norms about the PhD education and consider new ways to use your education to make a memorable impact on the world.
