Finding Your Side Hustle: Redefining the PhD
Thursday, April 18, 2019, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT
The New York Academy of Sciences, 7 World Trade Center, 250 Greenwich St Fl 40, New York
Are you wondering how you can apply your scientific knowledge outside the lab while still staying on track with your PhD? What are the opportunities available to you that you may never have considered?
This event, the first in a series, will introduce you to young scientists just like you who have redefined their traditional PhD experiences by starting a side hustle based on their interests and passions. Each of these one-on-one talks will be moderated by Alejandro de la Puente, Associate Director of the Science Alliance.
Through the lens of experiences of our featured guests, you’ll learn to:
- Think like an entrepreneur to identify solutions to common problems, whether inside the lab or outside
- Apply your scientific knowledge to start your own ventures
- Reshape your graduate experience in new, fulfilling ways
- Craft a vision for your own professional mission
Our first featured guest is Sabin Dhakal, PhD, a researcher in breast cancer biology at Harvard University. Our conversation with Sabin will take you through his journey to the U.S. to pursue his career interests, to his activities as a researcher, to his passion to expand his horizons into entrepreneurship.
Sabin’s story will inspire you to rethink your own PhD experience, question the existing expectations about what you’ll do with your PhD, and consider new ways to use your education to make a memorable impact on the world, within academia or otherwise.
