REPORTS TO: Director, The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science
The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science at the New York Academy of Sciences (The Sackler Institute/ the Academy) was created by a founding gift from The Mortimer D. Sackler Foundation to spearhead a global effort to systematically and comprehensively address the critical global crisis in malnutrition, including obesity, under-nutrition and nutritional deficiencies. The Sackler Institute has collaborated with the World Health Organization to launch an initiative to develop and activate a global agenda for nutrition science research. Additionally, it works with academic institutions, non-profit organizations, government bodies, and corporations to convene scientists and experts that highlight advances in nutrition science; stimulate research by issuing grants and prizes to a worldwide network of researchers; and disseminate key ideas through publications. The Sackler Institute generates a coordinated network across sectors, disciplines, and geographies that promotes open communication; encourages exchange of information and resources; nurtures the next generation of scientists; and affects community intervention and public policy changes.
As a 501(c) (3) charity organization, the Academy seeks philanthropic support to carry out its mission and ensure that the institution has the resources, talent, and ability to deliver them. As a member of The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science, the Program Manager will assist in conference development, communication activities, grant writing, research, and program management. This is a unique opportunity for a person with excellent writing and interpersonal skills and a passion for nutrition science.
- Participate in rolling out the various activities of The Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science (conferences, closed-door technical meetings, grant-making), including by providing liaison with experts, scientific organizing committee and working groups members, stakeholders in the field, NGOs, and private industry)
- Support the development of nutrition conferences and technical consultations by working with Academy’s support team on logistics, marketing, audio-visual set up; and by providing post-conference reports and educational dissemination materials
- Manage and grow the Sackler Institute's digital presence through social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and website, in coordination with the Academy’s communication team.
- Serve as first point of contact for other programs of the Academy including Conference Center, Development, Communication, AV, Marketing, and Annals
- Support the production and promotion of all public documents generated by the Sackler Institute (e.g. white paper, technical brief, call to action, annual report) including through digital and physical platforms. Coordinate blog and other written contributions to extend the reach of the Institute’s communication.
- Monitor and consolidate information, discussions, and developments in the various areas of activities covered by the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science
- Establish and maintain a schedule of routine administrative reporting (financial, logistical, informational) to the NYAS
- In collaboration with the Development department, contribute to the writing of grants and reports
- Provides additional support to Sackler Institute team as required
This position does not have any supervisory responsibility.
- Bachelor degree in nutrition sciences or public health with nutrition focus.
- 2-4 year professional experience involving administrative and planning skills, preferably in a non-profit or academic institution
- Demonstrated ability to work in coordination with various teams to implement an activity
- Demonstrated ability to write in a clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive manner, with meticulous attention to detail.
- Ability to manage projects from start to finish, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines in both collaborative and independent settings. Interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to interact with high level global experts and executive level leaders.
- Ability to conduct topline literature reviews
- Strong commitment to rigorous and ethical scientific approach in all aspects of the job
- Demonstrated ability to deliver on complex tasks in a timely, detailed manner
- Broad interest in the multiple aspects that relate to nutrition science beyond the physiological mechanisms, e.g. policy development, technological innovation, structure of the food systems, public health
The Academy operates during standard business hours Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. Standard work week is 35 hours, unless otherwise noted.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.
This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filling cabinets and bend or stand as necessary.
