Social Media & Community Manager

JOB TITLE: Social Media & Community Manager

DEPARTMENT: Marketing & Communications

REPORTS TO: Chief Marketing Officer


The Social Media & Community Manager will deftly leverage social media and community marketing to elevate the Academy’s brand and achieve business objectives. This is a highly visible and cross-functional role integral to the Academy’s mission.


  • Develop overall organic social media strategy, audience growth plan, content calendar, and measurement/KPI framework.
  • Proactively and frequently participate in conversations with the Academy community on social media, increasing engagement levels and improving loyalty/advocacy.
  • Grow community and develop strategies to increase discoverability and amplification of the Academy’s content through influencer, partner, and community building strategies.
  • Partner with broader marketing and communications team on how social media can be used to advance the Academy’s business objectives. 


Social Media Strategy & Performance

  • Develop overall organic social media strategy and audience growth plan.
  • Focus on the growth of current channels (LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter). Develop strategy / business case for potential channel expansion, including established channels such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube as well as emerging channels such as ClubHouse and Dipso.
  • Ensure social media strategy supports a wide array of Academy goals including events, content dissemination, membership, and mission. Also ensure that the social media strategy is appropriately targeted for the Academy’s various audience segments from science students to established scientific professionals and researchers.
  • Ensure brand cohesion, across all social channels, by developing enterprise-wide social media policies, training, and brand guidelines. Develop an authentic, mission-oriented, and scientific appropriate tone of voice and visual experience.
  • Analyze performance on social media platforms and share findings with senior leadership. Foster a culture of continual improvement using analytics to refine strategy and approach. Develop KPIs and measurement framework.
  • Partner with the Marketing team to ideate and deliver on social aspects of campaign briefs to generate demand and conversions for Academy events and other programs.
  • Stay current on social media best practices and new technologies.
  • Ensure social media goals and results are communicated with senior leadership.

Grow engagement and reach of social media content:

  • Monitor and listen to social media sentiment trends and iterate strategy accordingly.
  • Proactively and frequently participate in conversations with the Academy community on social media, increasing engagement levels and improving loyalty/advocacy.
  • Develop an influencer, partner marketing, and community building strategies that grow audience reach and content amplification. As appropriate, leverage Academy scientific staff, authors, and speakers to advance community goals.
  • Leverage the Academy’s network to develop a robust community of brand advocates.
  • Outsource content creation, as needed.
  • Boost social media engagement through native advertising / sponsored content strategies.

Social Media Content

  • Identify content and topics that resonate with the Academy’s community and develop engaging content and social programs covering these topics.
  • Develop the social media editorial /content calendar.
  • Foster a culture of cross-departmental collaboration that encourages content ideation and innovation.
  • Cultivate a core team of Academy employees that will create compelling content for social media channels.
  • Partner with CMO, Marketing Director, and Content Director to develop an academy wide content strategy, including working with Academy staff, brand advocates / ambassadors, event speakers, and others to help create a compelling and efficient content operation.
  • Publish & schedule all posts and make changes to scheduling as required.




  • 3+ years of related agency or inhouse marketing experience.
  • Experience with, and a passion for, social media marketing. Track record in growing followers and engagement and in developing succesful social media campaigns.
  • Experience with influencer marketing, advocacy marketing, and content marketing are highly preferred. Candidates with scientific communication experience will be prioritized.
  • High familiarity with social media platforms tools, influencer tools, advocacy tools, and analytics platforms, including Sprout Social and Google Analytics.
  • Ability to derive insights and actionable next steps from social listening data and social platform performance.
  • Understand the role social plays in a robust owned and earned media strategy.
  • Strong multi-tasking, problem solving skills and ability to work in a team environment with the occasional delegation to junior staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.


The Academy operates during standard business hours Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. Standard work week is 35 hours, unless otherwise noted.

* Academy staff will continue to work remotely until July 2021.
