Statement from the Academy

Statement from the Academy

The events of the past week have been painful for us all as they have laid bare the racism and violence that impact Black communities in America. The sciences are not immune to racial discrimination and structures of exclusion. Members of our large scientific community regularly face overt as well as more subtle barriers and difficulties based on race.

At the Academy we strive to support scientists at every stage of their careers, working to build a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive STEM community. We recognize that collective action in the worlds of science and technology can be a powerful force for change, and that making the scientific community a fully welcoming place will take the efforts of all of us. As an institution we are taking this moment to look inward, proceeding with humility as we hold ourselves accountable for making our society more just and more equitable. At this time of pain and protest, we stand in solidarity with all those who share this same aspiration.
