The New York Academy of Sciences’ Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program Named a Finalist in the 2025 Anthem Awards

Program that places 900+ STEM professionals in NYC public schools is cited for community engagement.

New York, NY (October 21, 2025)The New York Academy of SciencesAfterschool STEM Mentoring Program has been named a finalist in the fifth annual Anthem Awards, which recognize organizations, brands and people completing mission-driven work. The program is also in contention for the Anthem Community Voice Award, which is determined entirely by public votes.

“At a time when science is under siege and education is scrutinized for what is taught to whom—and how—we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering scientific pursuits among young people of all ages and backgrounds,” said Nicholas B. Dirks, President and Chief Executive Officer of The New York Academy of Sciences. “We’re thrilled the Anthem Awards recognize the power of our Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program, which relies on many hundreds of scientists sharing their knowledge, wisdom and excitement with the young minds on whom our society’s future depends.”

The Academy’s Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program was created in partnership with the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) to help inspire curiosity and engagement with STEM topics. Research shows that mentorship is crucial for STEM students, especially those from underserved neighborhoods. More than 1,700 volunteer STEM professionals are in schools citywide, participating in student projects and discussing their own careers. In this way, students—many of whom have never met or interacted with a “real” scientist—can build career aspirations and grow from appreciating STEM to pursuing it. Over 23,000 students have already been impacted by the program at dozens of schools.

“This hasn’t been an easy year for the impact sector, but the Anthem Awards community has once again stepped up to provide hope and change lives no matter the circumstances,” said Anthem Awards General Manager, Patricia McLoughlin. “This year’s Finalists are an exemplary group of changemakers that we are excited to uplift and celebrate.”

Public voting for the Anthem Community Voice Award is open through October 30, 2025. Votes for the Afterschool STEM Mentoring Program can be cast here.
