Investing in Your Future

Stuck at home? Immerse yourself in the exciting world of science through our two-week virtual STEM Camps! Taught by real scientists and experts, this unique experience will expose students to cutting edge science research while encouraging them to think outside of the box. Participants can expect to gain skills in scientific research, communication, and critical thinking. This is an incredible opportunity to work alongside graduate and PhD-level scientists while gaining a deeper understanding of what it means to pursue a career in a STEM-related field. Participating students will receive a certificate from the Academy and access to curated resources to support their self-discovery in STEM.

We are now accepting registrations for Spring 2021. Our two-week camps will run April 5-16, Monday to Friday from 4-6pm EST. The cost of camp is $495 per student.

Welcome To Your Brain Gym! Think Like A Neuroscientist

In this course we will power our brain gym, or new neuron generation, and its importance to combat mental health disorders. You will analyze brain functionality through behavioral test studies and validate your results using biostatistics in a friendly user way. Finally, we will explore ways to improve our brain gym using meditation, art, and music.

Instructor: Dr. Sylvia Ortega-Martinez, Neuroscientist

Find Yourself: Tracing Human Origins Using DNA

In this workshop, you will learn what genetic ancestry is and how to determine an individual's ancestral origins using two types of genetic tests: autosomal and mitochondrial DNA tests. You will use publicly available genetic data from worldwide populations to determine an individual's autosomal and mitochondrial DNA ancestry. You will understand the importance of genetic ancestry in understanding our ancient origins and in health and disease. You will finally learn the process of performing a human genetic study including DNA collection and sequencing, data analysis, and communicating findings. Course topics include biology, genetics, programming, and statistics.

Instructor: Dr. Kevin Magnaye, Human Geneticist, University of Chicago

Engineering Solutions For Cardiovascular Diseases

We will explore fundamental knowledge on blood vessel structure and function and cardiovascular diseases. Alongside, we will look into blood vessels computational modeling and its practical applications in biomedical engineering. Students will ultimately work collaboratively to design fluidic devices with research applications to provide answers and solutions to prevalent cardiovascular problems.

Instructor: Andrés Moya-Rodríguez, PhD Candidate in Biophysics, University of Chicago
