Environmental engineers and economists use tools such as practical concepts, organizational structures, and programs. Marty Rowland has contributed to developing such tools for water resources management by communities, governments, and industry, supporting the principles of engineering integrity and community viability. A challenge is to align the material realm of engineering, as in controlling contamination, with social fairness and economic integrity. He has also helped develop standards for the American Society for the Testing of Materials (ASTM).

Marty will describe informative experiences, including:

Identification of soil bacteria by how water flows through sand impacted by waste products

Cooperative water sharing without economic rent, and its long-term performance in Tampa, FL

Best practices in risk reduction regarding ubiquitous soil contamination in New York City

Circular Urban Asset Management as a heuristic device (Colorado River, Long Island Railroad)

Speaker

Marty Rowland holds a PhD in Urban Studies from the University of New Orleans (2000) and has focused on natural resources economics. His career has included: Professional Environmental Engineer; remediation engineer for NASA at Lockheed Martin; hydrology for NYC Parks; lecturer and board member at the Henry George School of Social Science; and independent researcher. The Henry George movement focuses on social fairness and equitable distribution.
