Data are as ubiquitous as the air we breathe. With the combination of sensors, computing, math and creativity, data collection and visualization can engage students in new ways of seeing and reporting upon their world. Join UCLA Professor Mark Hansen as he describes his work at the intersection of data and design.
Mark Hansen is a Professor of Statistics at UCLA, with appointments in both Design|Media Art and Electrical Engineering, and is a Co-PI for the Center for Embedded Networked Sensing. His current research interests are participatory sensing and projects that engage the general public in non-professional practices of data collection and analysis.
Data is an essential element of math and science and the collection, analysis, and visualization can provide teachers with an excellent opportunity to teach key skills such as problem solving and "computational thinking." The New York Academy of Science and Math for America are pleased to offer a new series to help teachers integrate more data into their classrooms, expand their knowledge of careers that involve data, and inspire them to use data to reach struggling students.
