Summary

May 5, 2027 | 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM ET

Join world-leading experts at the forefront of adipose biology, obesity, muscle metabolism, and cardiometabolic disease for a one-day symposium on May 5, 2027.

The New York Academy of Sciences proudly presents “Beyond BMI: The Next Generation of Weight Loss Therapeutics,” which will bring together top basic, translational, and clinical scientists to define the next frontier in obesity therapeutics.

Recent advances in obesity research have established body composition—including adipose tissue distribution and skeletal muscle preservation—as a critical determinant of metabolic health and therapeutic success beyond weight or BMI alone. Research is revealing the molecular and genetic drivers of depot-specific adipose function and muscle maintenance during weight loss, while emerging AI and digital technologies are enabling more precise assessment of body composition, muscle mass, and muscle function. Together, these advances are creating new opportunities for therapies that directly target adipose dysfunction and preserve skeletal muscle, with the potential to improve long-term cardiometabolic health.

This symposium will convene leading voices in the field to discuss how advancing our understanding of adipose function can shape the development of next-generation therapies to improve metabolic health beyond food intake control. Take part in this exciting conference to explore the latest advancements in adipose biology, skeletal muscle physiology, and innovative assessment technologies.
