Mental Health First Aid - November 2, 2023

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an interactive training program designed to help individuals identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health issues and substance use disorders in adults. Similar to First Aid and CPR training, MHFA is a key set of skills that can allow scientists and educators to assist their students, peers and colleagues who may be experiencing an acute mental health issue.

Scientists and educators are encouraged to take this course to help address the growing mental health crisis in adults. Similar to First Aid and CPR, the training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Mental Health First Aid is an internationally recognized program that originated in Australia and is currently taught in more than 25 countries world wide. The program follows evidence-based fidelity standards.

Please note that this course involves two hours of self-paced online learning prior to the event.

Monica Simpson, Administrative Assistant/Public Relations Specialist joined the staff at Labette Center Mental Health Services (LCMHS) in 2004 as a front desk receptionist. In April of 2008, she became the Administrative Assistant/Public Relations and Marketing person for Labette Center. Born in Northwest Arkansas, her family moved to southeast Kansas, where she then spent most of her school age years in St. Paul. Upon graduation from high school, she left to attend Fort Hays State University. She returned to the area in 2001, and completed her bachelor's degree at Pittsburg State University in 2004. In 2014, she received a Master's in Liberal Studies, specializing in Social Networking from Fort Hays State University. Simpson and her family currently reside in southeast Kansas. In 2009, she participated in, and graduated from, the Leadership Parsons 2008-2009 Class. Simpson is a member of Soroptomist International and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Simpson became a Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor in March of 2013 and a Certified Youth Mental Health First Aid Instructor in May of 2013. In 2019, she went on to become an instructor for the National Council for Mental Wellbeing in the MHFA@Work program.
