Physical Sciences, Sustainability, and Engineering Discussion Group

The Physical Sciences, Sustainability, and Engineering Discussion Group is the Academy’s core program for convening professional scientific conferences and symposia, exploring cutting-edge topics, and developing ongoing initiatives in the physical sciences, sustainability, and engineering. Bringing together international experts and partners from academia, industry, government, and beyond, our programs provide a neutral forum for participants to exchange information and to collaborate on groundbreaking initiatives.
We identify the most critical research in a given field, create opportunities to advance it, and communicate the findings to a global audience.
Current Initiatives
Physical Sciences
We create programming for scientists and science enthusiasts, focusing on explorations of the boundaries of scientific knowledge and our understanding of the universe.
Mathematics and Computer Science
The annual Symposium on Machine Learning, presented by the Machine Learning Discussion Group at the New York Academy of Sciences, brings together leading researchers from academia and industry to present new algorithms for statistical learning and novel theoretical approaches, and to discuss applications of machine learning to real-world data.
Sustainability
Our Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Initiative is building on the highly successful Summit on Science and Technology Enablement for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to mobilize the scientific and technical community on behalf of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Urban Sustainability
An ongoing series of evening events bringing together experts in urban sustainability, this program builds on a ten-year history of the Academy’s pivotal role in providing a forum for discussion and exploration of climate change, urban resiliency, and green buildings.
