The Future of STEM: Our Young Members
Each year, the New York Academy of Sciences welcomes hundreds of Young Members, high school students ages 13-17, from around the world via our Global STEM Alliance mentoring and education programs. Young Members are part of a diverse group of innovators, explorers, and problem-solvers, united by a shared curiosity about the universe and a strong commitment to changing the world through STEM.
Students who apply and are accepted into qualifying STEM education programs become Young Members, entitling them to a number of benefits including a digital badge, exclusive access to selected Academy content, and one free year of Student/Postdoc Membership when they turn 18. + How can I become a Young Member?
Students ages 13-17 who apply and are accepted to qualifying programs of the Global STEM Alliance receive a Young Memberships to the New York Academy of Sciences.
Additionally, organizations that partner with the Academy may offer Young Membership to students participating in their own educational programming.
+ How will I know when my Young Membership has begun?
After the New York Academy of Sciences creates a Young Membership for you, you will receive a welcome email from the Academy containing information about your Young Membership and included benefits.
+ What are the benefits of Young Membership?
- Digital subscriptions to Academy eNews, STEM Education Updates, and Career Builder newsletters.
- Unlimited digital access to eBriefings, multimedia reports on research presented at the Academy.
- Discounted or free access to virtual Academy events, covering cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary topics in STEM.
- An invitation to attend the annual Global STEM Alliance Summit.
- A digital Young Member badge that can be shared on social media, embedded on a personal website, or downloaded as a PDF.
- One free year of Student/Postdoc Membership, to begin when you turn 18 years old.
+ How do I log into my Academy Dashboard?
To log in to your Dashboard, you will need to enter your unique username and password. Your username can be found in your Young Member welcome email. If this is your first time logging in, or if you have forgotten your password, click here to create a new password. Once you’ve logged in, you can view and edit your account details all from your own Dashboard.
+ How do I change my digital subscriptions to Academy newsletters?
From your Dashboard, click Edit Email Preferences. You’ll be taken to a page where you can edit your Academy newsletter and email subscription preferences. Our eNews is a monthly email newsletter highlighting our latest events, publications, and opportunities. In the STEM Education Updates newsletter, you’ll receive special announcements from our Global STEM Alliance. Our Career Builder newsletter includes information on resources and opportunities for developing a career in STEM.
+ What are eBriefings and how can I access them?
eBriefings are digital, multimedia reports on the cross-disciplinary research presented at the Academy every year. To access eBriefings, click here. You may notice that some eBriefings are open to the public and some are closed for Members as indicated by the “lock” icon next to the publication title. Be sure you are logged in to your Academy account for full Member access to the entire eBriefings library.
+ How do I register for an Academy event?
Visit the Academy’s upcoming event calendar and click on an event that is of interest to you. From the event page, click the “Register” button and you’ll be taken to a page where you can register for the event.
+ What if I want to register for an event online and I am told I cannot?
There are some Academy events that Young Members may not register for online. If you attempt to register for one of these events, you will see a notification indicating that you may not register online for this type of event until your Student Membership term begins. If you have questions about registering for an event that does not allow online Young Member registration, please email customerservice@nyas.org
+ How do I claim my digital Young Membership badge?
Shortly after your Young Membership is created, you will receive an email from admin@credly.com notifying you that you have earned a digital badge from the New York Academy of Sciences. To claim this badge, click the link in the email to create an account on the Credly digital badge platform and accept your badge. This digital badge can be shared on social media, embedded on a personal website, or downloaded as a PDF certificate.
+ When does my Young Membership end?
+ When does my free year of Student Membership begin?
Your complimentary year of Student Membership will automatically begin on the first of the month in which you turn 18 years old. For example, if you turn 18 on May 14, 2024, your complimentary year of Student Membership will begin on May 1, 2024. You will receive an email from the Academy notifying you when your complimentary year of Student Membership begins.
+ When does my free year of Student Membership expire?
Your complimentary year of Student Membership will expire 12 months after it begins. You can find your Membership expiration date in your Dashboard under “Current Membership Term”
+ What are the benefits of Student Membership?
- Discounted or free access to all scientific symposia, webinars, and conferences.
- Access to career readiness and training opportunities, through webinars, workshops, and online courses designed to help plan a successful career in STEM.
- Unlimited digital access to our complete digital catalog of eBriefings.
- Unlimited digital access to Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, among the world’s most cited interdisciplinary scientific publications.
- The ability to connect with other Members through our global Member Directory.

+ What will happen at the end of my free Student Membership year?
About 90 days before the end of your Membership term, you will begin to receive a series of emails notifying you that your Student Membership will soon expire. The emails will provide instructions and information about how to renew your Student Membership on a self-paid basis. Click here for information about renewing your Student Membership and how to check whether your university might be willing to sponsor students for Academy Membership via our Science Alliance program.
+ Will I receive additional years of Membership if I am accepted as a student or mentee to more than one GSA mentoring program or if I participate in more than one program year?
No, you will not receive additional Young Membership material or benefits if you are accepted as a student or a mentee to multiple mentoring programs or if you have participated in multiple program years. Once your Young Membership is created, it will remain active until you turn 18 years old, at which point your complimentary year of Student Membership will begin.
+ Why can’t I change my Member Directory preferences when I edit my Dashboard profile or search for myself in the Academy Member Directory?
To protect the privacy of Young Members, your personal information is automatically hidden from the online Member Directory. You may opt to change your Directory preferences when you turn 18 years old.
+ What if I have additional questions about Academy Membership?
