Science & the City, the public outreach program of the New York Academy of Sciences, in partnership with The Farber Center for Radiation Oncology, is hosting this FREE EDUCATIONAL EVENT where breast cancer patients and survivors, their families and friends, patient advocates, caregivers and other local medical professionals and people with a general interest in breast health will come together to learn about the latest diagnostic techniques, surgical and radiation therapies, and available treatments for breast cancer patients.
The agenda for this half-day program features a keynote presentation by Drs. Francis P. Arena, medical oncologists and Tanya Manuali Bastianich, art historian, co-authors of Reflections of the Breast: Breast Cancer in Art through the Ages, followed by interactive panel discussions where leading medical experts in the breast cancer care community in New York City will be available to respond to questions from the general public, patients, and caregivers. Highlighted panelists include radiation oncologists, a breast imaging expert, a medical oncologist, a breast surgeon, and a breast reconstruction surgeon.
The educational event will also include plenty of time for networking and one-on-one interaction opportunities with leading oncology experts and representatives from available exhibitors who support breast cancer care and work to increase awareness of this disease.

Francis Arena, MD
Arena Oncology Associates
Dr. Arena is a medical oncologist and author of Reflections of the Breast: Breast Cancer in Art through the Ages, a journey through the evolution of medicine and art. He heads a private practice, Arena Oncology Associates in Lake Success, NY, and is the founder of the SASS Foundation for Medical Research. A former practicing physician at one of the most renowned cancer centers in the world, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, it was his mission to create a Long Island-based office that would offer a continuum of the level of cancer treatment which he practiced at Sloan-Kettering. He is on the Advisory Board of "1 in 9", the Breast Cancer Coalition, and serves as a consultant for numerous pharmaceutical companies. He is an Assistant Editor of the journal Oncology.
Tanya Bastianich Manuali, PhD
Art Historian
Dr. Bastianich Manuali is an art historian who has been immersed in Italian culture her entire life. She graduated from Georgetown University summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in art history. Her junior year was spent abroad in Florence, Italy, studying Italian Renaissance art history, which was to become her passion. She continued her studies with a full scholarship for a Masters program from Syracuse University, specializing in Italian Renaissance art history. This two year program, which took place in Florence Italy, was the beginning of Tanya’s six-year sojourn in Italy, in particular, living in the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence. Dr. Bastianich Manuali continued her studies with a merit based scholarship at Oxford University (UK), again focusing on Italian Renaissance art history. She completed her PhD in 2000 and began teaching in Italy for Boston College and Syracuse University. Dr. Bastianich Manuali co-authored Lidia’s Italy and Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy: A Feast of 175 Regional Recipes, both published by Alfred A. Knopf. Her latest publication is Reflections of the Breast: Breast Cancer in Art Through the Ages, which she co-authored with Dr. Francis Arena.

Dr. Farber is a board certified physician in radiation oncology, who has been in private practice for over a decade, recently serving as Chairman of Radiation Oncology at Staten Island University Hospital, and the founder of the Farber Center for Radiation Oncology in Lower Manhattan.

Dr. Herman is a radiologist in private practice specializing in breast imaging and interventional breast procedures. Previously she held the position of Assistant Clinical Professor of Radiology at Mount Sinai Hospital.

The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary
Dr. Levine is a breast reconstruction surgeon who operates at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, a hospital specializing in advanced plastic surgical procedures and impeccable patient care.
Marnee Spierer, MD
The Farber Center for Radiation Oncology
Dr. Spierer is a board certified physician in radiation oncology with the Farber Center for Radiation Oncology. Previously she has served as Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where she served as residency program director and was instrumental in the education of residents and medical students. She is frequently an invited lecturer on topics including women's oncology and breast cancer, and has written about breast cancer, sarcoma, lymphoma, and pediatric malignancies.
Eleni Tousimis, MD
New-York-Presbyterian Weill-Cornell Medical Center
Dr. Tousimis is a breast surgeon at the New-York-Presbyterian Weill-Cornell Medical Center, and is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. She plays an active role in resident training, serving as Associate Program Director of Surgical Education. Dr. Tousimis is trained in the latest technological advances in the treatment of breast disease, specializing in minimally invasive techniques.
